how does a catalitic converter work and how do you change it?

i have a 1995 toyota tocoma and i need to change the catalitic converter but i don't know what it does or where it is to change it

It converts pollutants to CO2 and water by combining them with oxygen. It's between the engine and muffler. It will take some exhaust pipe welding to change out, so a visit to Midas might be in order. You can find one on autozone.com for $70 so don't let some crook tell you it's an $800 job.
