Well,to be honest..most successful singers(BLACK),have gotten their start in the church!!!,,especially the baptist!! they either sung on the choir or just had a gift but were awed by the church choir!!..its their foundation, people like Aretha,Patti,Gladys,Teddy,Curtis,Anita, david ruffin, and even today artists like fantasia, ruben, jennifer, and etc,.u can hear the gospel background in their voices and music!!!..a lot of these artists that i have mentioned and others, were ridiculed when they started doing secular music, because the only thing they ever knew about singing was God.. a lot of individuals feel the need to keep the church background in their music, singers like Al Green and The Staple Singers..i dont think they refuse to work, some call it selling out,im pretty sure that some of todays biggest gospel artists wanted to go to secular, but they wouldnt go it because they feel comfortable singing what they already know,as i see it,its nothing wrong with making your money, meaning that if i have to sing these songs to get paid i will,i see it like this,as long as im not living a crazy lifestyle,i see nothing wrong with it..

For those of you that didn't know, here are a few:
Rev Run: Preacher
Salt (from Salt N Pepa): Saved
Grandmaster Flash: Gospel Preacher
Shirley Murdock: Saved sings Gospel only
Deniece Williams: SAved sings Gospel only
You must realize that most black artists started in the church and were raised in church. When the world showed them money and fame the artist turned their back on the church. Some know that they were wrong (according to their religious teachings) and came back to the church. I don't think they are acting "holier than thou", people that act that way are not truly holy. The artist just make a declaration that they have changed and do not do that same things anymore.

Perhaps you should look at your question from a different angle. We (mostly) look for God. And singling out "black singers?? What I think happens is that when they become successful, and have obtained all that they wanted they realize that something is still missing in there lives. They know that they have the "Material" aspect of there lives taken care of. So the spiritual cries out and thus they look for God.......

First, you statement is not accurate and generalizations never are.
Second, If an music artist (including Elvis, who I'm sure is not black) turns to God, it is because they realize that their gift and success is attributed to God and God alone.
Lastly, If you don't like Gospel, don't put it down, just don't listen to it. I don't like country, I don't listen to it, I don't criticize the gifted artist who play it or the people who like it.

well in the entertain ment business you are exposed to alot of demons and evils. Sometimes its too much for people to handle. No matter what genre you are-people always have that defining point in their life if they will chose God or not. The Lord is waiting for you too. :0

All people should find GOD. If they really mean it, then it is a good thing.
