I have an old gateway(about 7 years old) that i had bought a extended memory chip for. So can I put it into my 2 year old Compaq

Probably not. Your old Gateway probably uses SDRam and your newer Compaq uses DDR or maybe even DDR2.

NOPE. 7 year old PC typically uses slow 168 pin SDRAM. Your 2 year old Compaq could be using the faster 184 pin ddr-sdram or the 240 pin ddr2-sdram.

Gateway and Compaq both user proprietary hardware --- they're not compatible.
