Pre-season polls are educated guesses by reasonably knowledgable "experts" as to who's going to be the best team in the country. USC is the top-ranked team on every poll I've seen to date. That's not unreasonable. They generally have the most talented roster of any team in college football. They're always loaded at the tailback and o-line positions. This year they have an extremely talented, experienced guy at QB and what is said to be the best defense they've had in years (and that's saying something). They've been touted as this seasons' top team since January. I can't see any reason to dispute it. The team I think being underrated is West Virginia. They have most of their starters back and they are going to score LOTS of points. I expect to see SoCal and WVa in the national title game next winter

I think it is dumb to have preseason polls. The season hasn't even started and the so called experts haven't even seen any teams play yet. They should wait till week 4, or at least week 3 to decide where teams really should be placed. If they did it my way Auburn would have been in the championship game vs. USC a couple years ago instead of Oklahoma. When you have preseason polls the voters are often to stubborn to change their votes no matter what happens. Every year you have surprises and disappointments that none of the so called experts ever predict. I dislike the pre-season poll no matter where they place any of the teams.

The preseason poll really doesn't mean too much but I like it and can't wait every year until it comes out but the way they have the top 10 I would say it is pretty fair and USC should have the top spot for now but look out at the end of the season and do not be suprised if LSU or even Florida for that matter is at that top spot

God Bless you...

I don't think the polls mean diddly. That's why they play the games--polls and predictions mean nothing. Until we have a true playoff system, though, the polls are all we've got.

Now whether or not USC is the best team in the land, we'll find out. According to NCAA'08 on the PS2, they got beat twice--Cal and Nebraska. So go ahead and write 'em down as losses...lol!!!

Big 10 has a presence on that list with my Badgers at #7, I can't argue with that. We got screwed last year not getting able to play in a BCS Bowl game, I hope we can change that this year...winning the Capital One Bowl twice isn't good enough....I think the poll is pretty good right now, for a preseason poll...

Pre season polls are what the so called experts think will happen, and many times are correct but not always. That's why they play the games on the field, to see who is or is not at the top at the end of the season. And by the way, LSU is not rebuilding but reloading!

Yeah, I think the current polls are basically fair, but I also think it's ludicrous to have pre-season polls. It punishes good teams that aren't expected to be good, like Auburn in 2004. It's that much harder for them to leapfrog people.

I'd much rather see them wait 5-6 weeks into the season and then make the first poll based on those results, rather than on projections that rely on last year's results, returning players, and new recruits (whose abilities really can't be predicted that well).

Well its just the preseason poll. USC deserved #1 after beating the crap out of Michigan in the Rose Bowl. I just dont like preseason polls in general. This is coming from a LSU fan.

The nice thing about NCAA basketball is that rankings dont mean squat. Look at NC STATE in 1983 and the year Villanova won it all. Rankings are TOTAL bullshit and its time the college football committee realizes it. Appalachain State plays Michigan their 1st game. SHOULD the Wolverines lose what does their ranking mean???

i think that they are fair,,, but i just cant see Michigan up there as high as they are,,,, they did get spanked by USC and actually lost their last two games last year, and squeaked by Wisconsin,,, dont think that the badgers got the love that they are deserving of,,,,,,, but as you guys said before,,,,, only time will tell and when the games start and the emotions start to flow we shall see,,, i do think that USC is tough and has tremendous talent but they have some real tough tests too,,, and John David Booty isnt that tough as people are ranking him,,, put him with some other team and he is mediocre at best,,,,, hell i could throw at USC and im old and fat
