If Freemasons have any secrets, then they could be classified as occult knowledge. Occult can mean "hidden from normal view" ie secret, as well as/or paranormal

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occult

Nobody shares an "important" secret with people who they don't trust. And I'd guess that Freemasons, like other secret societies, find that sharing secrets encourages members to trust each other.

Also information only becomes a secret IF you've been told that it is so. I feel that is quite likely that your father actually "taught" you what the "secret" is, and you just haven't realised, because he didn't say it was secret. Mayby the secret is more to do with how Freemasons treat certain infomation, it might not be secret to others?

(Sometimes the best place to hide things is in full view.)

If there was a secret, why would it be told on Yahoo Answers? If it was told, would you believe it, would you even recognise it?

I think best thing to do is read books like The Hiram Key (Knight and Lomas), enjoy it as a good read, and then discuss with maybe religious friends and see how you get on.

The link between Freemasons foundations and The Knights Templars demise are pretty much established.

The secret will almost definitely have religious implications.

As an alternative, The Sign and the Seal by Graham Hancock is also a good read on a similar subject.

There are no secrets in Freemasonry. Everything that is taught in Lodge is available online and in readily available books (Amazon, eBay, etc...). It is likely your father did not talk about it for 2 reasons 1) although there are no secrets, we don't run around talking about everything and 2) he might have been trying to peak your interest so that you would want to see what it was all about.

To some other points made already:
*There have been a couple points about it not being a secret if you were told so don't expect and honest answer. That is trying to affirm the negative which you can't do. Everything within Freemasony is published, online and in books. There are a variety of Masonic and anti-Masonic website that show everything in videos and texts. This is an honest answer.
*A Master Mason in not a 1st degree, if you are going to pretend to be a Mason at least spend 15 minutes doing some research on the web and get some things straight.
*No one ever has been hurt for revealing any of the teachings of Freemasonry. So any references to "I'd have to kill you if I told you" are mere works of fantasy, hollywood and fiction.
*The obligations are symbolic and not literal, if you read any text Masonic Ritual available online and you will see the error in this statement. It is true though that we do no go around looking for public recognition for what we do; and that Marty is not a Mason.
*The secret word...again, its symbolic, no literal importance of it as a secret word. Knight and Lomas are full of inconsistencies and take great liberties in mixing history with fiction.
*Freemasons do not get drunk, there are rules of conduct, especially within a Lodge about excesses...
*Freemasons do not worship the devil; that is a flat out lie spread by anti-masons. If you worship the devil, you cannot be a Freemason.
*Someone is confusing a few texts and the misinterpretations of them by anti-masonic bodies.
*If I can trust no one, then I cannot trust you or your answer. You cannot rationally, nor logically, be the exception to your own generalizations.

I am not a mason but I have known a few. I would say that the secrets are in two parts. One is the words and signs used to identify another mason and they do this so that when they are negotiating deals etc they can give another mason a good deal Second I expect the other secrets are the ceremonies they use to initiate and promote members, open and close meetings etc.

There is a secret word but it was LOST. Even most of the Freemasons themselves don't know what it is. If you read "The Hiram Key" by Chris Knight and Robert Lomas you will start to understand more about Freemasonry and what it represents

cl_freemason wrote a good answer. I am a past master of my masonic lodge. A master mason is a third degree mason. There were secrets in the ritualistic part of the masonic order, but as cl_freemason stated, they have been revealed and have been published for any to see who want to take the trouble. There is no great secret that we all know that no one else knows. Masonry is a fraternal organization. No more, no less. Masonry's goal is to make good men better. One must believe in a supreme being to become a mason. The devil doesn't count. Except in one ceremony, alcohol is banned from the lodge building. Masons tend to be normal, ordinary, good guys.

I know several masons, but try as i might i cant squeeze any interesting info out of them.but what they have told me is that they help one another, give business to one another and raise money for charities. As they are really nice people, aswell as sucessful businessmen, i dont believe that anything sinister or untoward goes on at their meetings.its more a case of people being suspicious about things they no little about, and wanting to believe there must be something dodgy going on.As someone else mentioned, The Hiram Key is an excellent book to read on the subject.

The secrets of freemasonry are only in place so Freemasons can recognise each other when they travel the world. They are huge contributors to charities the world over. They wish to be extensively serviceable to their fellow men and must abide by the laws of the country they reside in. Can only speak on Scottish rite of Freemasonry.
