New York State is a large and diverse area; there is much more to it than just New York City. I worked in New York City for years, and my wife is originally from Buffalo, NY, so I've spent some time there, too. And my work took me all over New York State, as well as to many other places.
I have more relatives living in California than any other state, and have also spent much time there.
Both states offer both good & bad places to live, and you can always travel, no matter where you call home. It's a hard choice, but I think I'd choose something on the southern coast of California, assuming I had the money to buy there - real estate is expensive in the area I have in mind. Why? Good weather, and pretty much everything you want is within easy driving range.
If I was't flush enough to afford the southern California coast, I'd move to upstate New York, probably east suburban Buffalo. Winters are tough there, but spring through fall, the weather is nice. It is peach-picking season there right now. Real estate is very affordable, and except for the nasty taxes, the cost of living is low. When you want real big city excitement, Buffalo has more than you might think, and Toronto is not far away. The area around Niagra Falls is interesting, too.

Californian. I was one until less than a year ago. I moved to Missouri for a better cost of living, but I still remember my central California experience fondly. I was there from 1976, when I moved to San Francisco from Ann Arbor, Michigan. I left in February of this year.
New York is too cold!!!

California...you can go from high mountain skiing to surfing in six hours. but ...Cali is a very diverse piece of terrain ethnically and politically. parts of the central valley and the southern portion are as politically progressive as Kansas. thus a bizarre choice for governor named arnold; but, the sweetest place is the San Francisco bay area. Caucasians are officially in the minority. (i'm white) and i love the diversity of cultures present here.

LOVE them both, but think I would pick California.
The Reason: Attitude in California is a little slower paced and relaxed (unless you are talking LA). The weather is often nicer too and there are more beaches to chose from.
