Would I use the headphone jack for that? Or am I an idiot?

You're not an idiot. Use the headphone jack as long as the speakers are designed for a computer.
It's usually called the "line-in" jack.
Some speakers are powered by batteries and others you plug into a wall outlet. Choose which one suits you best.
The choices are endless. You can buy inexpensive ones for about $10.00 or spend 10x that much for a speaker "system" with woofer, etc.
I have found that my built-in speakers are usually adequate for casual listening while I'm working but I also have some mid-grade speakers for more devoted listening.
Even better.... use your stereo system for music and laptop for computing! RCA makes a system for around $100 that you plug your mp3 player into. Don't recall the model (and too lazy to google it right now), but you can find it at Wal-Mart and it also has a 5-cd changer.
Download your mp3s, plug into the stereo and save your processing power!

That doesn't work on a HP Notebook. Headphone jack is useless for speakers.
