my friend told me that using a router (currently i'm using an ADSL usb modem) will speed up my internet connection! is that true?

The only way to get more speed is to subscribe to a faster connection 512kbps is on the slow end -- go for at least 3Mbps.

I recommend checking to see if Verizon Fios is available in your area -- I switched to them from Comcast a few months ago and it has been excellent -- 30Mbps download / 3 Mbps upload for $35.00/month. Very satisfied!

Even if you do get a router, you will still need to use a DSL modem. The only way to speed up your connection is to pay for it.

Not true. The only way to speed up your connection is to call your ISP and ask for more bandwidth.
