Does not have to be of great "real" value.

Mine are my father's first communion kit containing a bible, a rosary, and charms; My grandmother's rocking chair; and an old political flyer picturing my grandfather when he ran for the senate in the 60's.

How lovely you have such Precious Things in your possession... You sound like a very special person to treasure you Father's first communion Kit. I have a letter my father wrote my mother during the war, heart-breaking. I have my father's old watch, and my mother's prayer book.
There are many other things of my parents that I treasure a lot, but these three mean a lot to me.

I'm just not a sentimental person. I have things -my mothers costume jewelry, her bibles and my fathers, pictures and her poems/other writings. These I would never want to be taken from the family and they mean a lot to me.
But still, if something should happen to them, out of my control, I would be unhappy, but not devastated. It is material stuff. I have my memories. Even those can be taken by brain injury or disease. It is best to enjoy the tokens while we have them, but don't get too attached. Enjoy every moment of life we have especially with those we cherish. That is the most important thing.
Good question, hope my personal feeling didn't put a damper on it.

My grandmother fought in the home army (against Hitler) in Poland during WWII and received a medal for being shot in the stomach. Her (then future) husband was in the same resistance at the same time in a different place, and had a chapter in a book written about him, and when he was captured, his work camp photograph just screams, "Eat crap!" My grandmother's medal and my grandfather's picture are the two things I'd want to save if our house was burning down, I'm very proud of them. :)

in a sense as others have stated there are both good and bad things about keeping material goods as mementos. the things that I treasure the most are the traditions of the Fraternal Organizations my Great - Grandfathers, my Grandfathers and my father belonged to. I am proud to have carried on the tradition of belonging to three Fraternal Orders which they either belonged to or in the case of my Great Grandfathers inherited the traditions to continue on.

The answer is in your question. First...you are family and second....it was an accident. Offer to take it to the dry cleaners and pay the bill. If she refuses your offer, let it roll off your back. The rest of the family will see to it that she forgives you....or, she will look like an idiot.

Several actually...all handmade by someone.

Woodcarvings my Dad made of our dogs, & a hope chest he made in cherry wood with two cherubs flying into each others arms.

A wooden box my husband made in 5th grade, it holds priceless papers like love letters, little gifts from kids, ticket stubs, a lock of hair, etc.

A lovely set of handpainted china pieces made by my Grandma, with roses and violets, my fave flowers as a child.

My teabox, made by my brother, it matches a tray he made. Both are used daily.

The rolling pin my grandpa made for my grandma, and about 100 cookie cutters given to me by kids and friends.

Beautiful handwoven rag rugs made by my best friend. One is made from an old linen tablecloth, and its just gorgeous as a runner on our buffet.

Signs from our parents and grandparents stores and restaurants, where we learned all about hard work and the rewards you get.

Old papers of my Dads, Scott's Grandpa and Grandma, and my Grandma. They have everything from letters to store journals to old advertisements to harness racing stats on their horses. They are so cool.

Beautiful watercolor paintings by my aunts, of roses, pastures, strawberries, hummingbirds. These are framed and in a collection on our dining room wall.

A hand painted tile "trivet" made by my neices.

This list could go on and on, nearly everything here is sentimental except the store bought electronics and stuff.

I have a lot which I can't manage to throw away. Everytime I see them I'm reminded of my late grandmother and aunt who were so dear to me, and still are. These things are my "connection" to them in a way, i won't ever sell them for any price.
