Running water was much healthier and more pure than stagnant lakes and of course Oceans and Seas were full of salt.

using Egypt as an example, they counted on the Nile to rise over the banks every year and made special ways to funnel the water into areas to irrigate the land to grow crops hence increase population.

Without a supply of steady fresh water humanity cannot survive.

In the Mt Fortress of Masada they built a special cictern that collected rain water allowing the defenders to virutally live much longer than their foes that far in the desert. It was only the ingenuity of Rome that defeated Masada, not starvation.

So that is why rivers have been so important. Look at the oldest and most well known area of the world, the Middle east, esp Baghdad near former Babylon. It lies between two rivers allowing for both great irrigation and also good natural defense.
I hope that helps you.

you take as example Egyptians. They Live on river Nil. They have many plants and good land for plants, that without Nil they wouldn't live even today. So river helped many people to survive. The people who lived near river have more to eat. They can get fish from rivers so fishing was one of the most reasons how did rivers help civilisation's.

Rivers helped with survival. (Good source for water & food.). Easier travel. If one needed to hide from someone else, you can go in the water to help from leaving tracks ans scents.

They used the river as a highway to transport goods, travel and produce power (such as for grain mills.)

Remember, they didn't have roads so travel was hard going through fields and woods.

briefly speaking it was much easier to travel up and down and around rivers and coastal areas than it was to try to travel around on land ...... a big plus was that if you stayed on the river it was difficult to get lost or lose a trail
