I've played with both the original version and the "simplified" newer version.

I must say, that is one thing that I feel BMW really flopped on.

Using the thing is not only difficult, but can be dangerous! It draws your attention to the screen as you roll the wheel... meanwhile, your eyes are OFF the road by then...

It would be so much easier to just have a touch-screen or even a touch pad!

I haven't owned one of the newer BMW's with it. But, from the Consumer Reports writeups, it sounds pretty bad. I've spent 50 years in electro/mechanical maintenance working on everything from radios to computers to missile electronics. The first rule of good engineering is KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid). From what I've read, BMW completely forgot that with the iDrive.

No. Nothing is worse than anything involving the words: Mariah or Carey. iDrive is easy to use if you aren't a complete moron....(which I agree BMW should have dumbed it down for the idiots,) but seriously how hard is it to select what you want to do and click the ****** selector? How do you retards use your computers at home?!! Windows is twice as complex and unintuitive as iDrive. If you don't like it go buy a Honda and leave the quality, well built, well thought cars to us people who appreciate them.

Vote with your dollar and don't buy the car if you don't like it.
yes, it isn't too difficult to figure out. But figuring out is one thing, getting used to it is another. I purchased many BMWs in the past, but stop buying them. My last car is E34, and I drive it to this day. Part of reason is iDrive, another one is the quality.

I've only played with it briefly. It does seem a little overly complicated. But unless you are retarded, it's fairly easy to figure out. I figured it out in a few minutes, without reference to an instruction book. I still think BMW can improve upon it, but we'll see what happens.
