Bad smell could be several things. Diarrhea just naturally smells bad, but there are two things that come to mind that cause a particularly bad odor that can't be mistaken for just a "bad smell". Those things are: The bacterium Clostridium Difficile. The second, if the person having the diarrhea is an infant, is roto virus. Both these conditions require medical attention to resolve. The red color may come from blood. The brighter the color, the closer to the rectum the bleeding occurs. The darker red to nearly black would indicate bleeding higher in the gastrointestinal tract, up to and including the stomach. If there is enough bleeding present, the diarrhea will have a definite, marked "brassy" smell. Even if none of these conditions apply, unresolved diarrhea should be investigated by a doctor. Immediately, the most critical risk is dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, so until you can see a doctor, sip on Gator Aide throughout the day. Don't drink more than two ounces at a time...large volumes of liquids can trigger another episode of diarrhea.
