Most g/d's have a 'locking ring' that holds them in place, But first things first: UNPLUG IT from the outlet. Then disconnect the p-trap, etc. Disconnect the discharge hose from the air-gap to the g/d. Those locking rings are either of two types: a single bolt holding a collar to the bottom of the drain opening under the sink, or a ring that has 3 round loops on it that can be loosened by inserting that bent-end tool that came in the box with the g/d that you probably never used and maybe misplaced or lost, in which case the end of a short-ish screwdriver can be inserted so you can twist the locking ring off. Getting the d**n thing back on is the 'good/fun' part. Be sure to have some Plumber's Putty available to put under the new drain fitting that sits in the sink...make a 1/2" roll of it, put it under the bottom of the drain fitting, put the drain fitting in the bottom of the new sink, press down and watch some of the putty ooze out, then re-attach the g/d. If you've done one, you've done them all...it's a slight pain but not terribly difficult. While everything is disassembled, disconnect the black discharge from the g/d and the air-gap and run hot water through it...chances are a lot of stinky crap will come flying out.

As you use your garbage disposal, pieces of food get caught on the sides and the rubber part of the opening. If you do not run the water long enough or use enough water pressure, some of those food particles will stick and then start to rot, which will cause foul odors to fill the air. Soap and Water One of the easiest ways to combat awful smells from your garbage disposal is to put a stopper or plate over the opening of the garbage disposal, then fill your sink with hot water. Add about 1/8 cup of grease-cutting liquid dish soap. Remove the stopper or plate and turn on the garbage disposal. This will thoroughly flush out the disposal as well as your pipes. After turning off the disposal, wipe the underside of the rubber flanges to make sure all food particles are gone. Ice Ice can help remove food that is stuck to the sides of the disposal. Another method to help scour the sides of the disposal is to use ice. Fill the inside of the garbage disposal with ice, then put in the stopper and turn it on. As the ice is crushed, it will act like a scouring pad and help remove particles that are hardened or stuck onto the sides. With this method, you will want to follow up with the hot water and soap method or use a natural deodorizer to help eliminate the odors. Natural Deodorize Grinding up orange and lemon peels releases a fresh citrus scent. Cut up an orange or lemon and throw it in the disposal. Run water and turn the disposal on. The citric acid from the fruit will leave a pleasant odor. Another natural deodorizer is baking soda and vinegar. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of baking soda inside the garbage disposal, then add 1/2 cup of vinegar into the unit. Do not turn it on. You will hear the baking soda and vinegar fizz at first. After five minutes, run hot water and turn on the disposal. Let it run for 30 seconds to a minute. This will eliminate bad smells. Hope that helps you , Good luck.

Usually, disposals are attached to a special flange installed in the sink drain. There is a ring, which SHOULD have 2-3 rings around the outside. Put a punch or Phillips screwdriver in one of the rings, and turn ring counter-clockwise (left) as you're laying under the sink (pretty uncomfortable, isn't it?) looking up at the disposal. BE CAREFULL! once the ring is turned 1/4 to 1/3 a turn, the disposal will drop out, so have a hold of it, unless you LIKE 5 pounds smacking you in the teeth/nose.

You can buy garbage disposal cleaners at any store like a walmart... usually close to where the dishwashing detergents are. One is called plink and is little balls that you put in the disposal to freshen it up. The other comes in a box and is more heavy duty and would probably work better for the first cleaning... it really cleans and makes it smell so much better, On tv I have seen them put baking soda, salt and vinegar down the disposal causing a little "eruption" then turning on the disposal with the water running but I haven't tried this method myself.

most of the time garbage disposals are very easy to remove. most just twist right off. if it is a stainless steel or aluminium sink it should be very easy. I jsut looked at one on the internet and it should come off easy. The disposal itself should just twist off, but the sink strainer might take a little work, but if you are removing the sink it self i wouldnt worry about it. you might not even need any tools to get the GD off.
