it seems like a stupid thing to put yourself through if its not going to be effective!plus the risk of ectopic pregnancy is not good either! is this the only option for women that don't want any more children besides being on hormonal methods of birth control? seems like there should be some better way to do this now a days with our awesome medical technology. is there?

tubal ligation is very effective in preventing pregnancy, much more so than birth control pills. The risk of ectopic pregnancy is so miniscule that most doctors don't even worry about it, they just have to tell you about it because of legal liability, it has happened to maybe one in a million women. You see, the tubes are not just tied off, they are cut and cauterized as well sealing them shut.
however, if you want 100% no fail, never pregnant again, have a uterine hysterectomy, they leave your ovaries in so you still get the benefit of hormones, but you have no uterus or fallopian tubes, and your cervix is removed and you are sewn shut. they can do this vaginally or thru a bikini line incision in your lower abdomen.

If your ancestors didn't try something new unless there was a 100% guarantee that it would work, you'd still be living in a cave somewhere.

Women have their tubes tied because it's mostly effective. Say 99% of the women that have their tubes tied off no longer get pregnant. That means that for 100 normally sexually active woman, only one pregnancy will occur in a year's time. That's pretty good odds.

There are other methods if you don't like this one, however. There's IUDs, and there used to be a method where a silicone plug was put in the fallopian tube. I don't know if that's still done - I'm not doctor or medical expert.

If you don't want to have any more children, sterilization is a highly reliable method that rarely results in pregnancy. Female sterilization virtually eliminates the chance to get pregnant, with a greater than 99% success rate.

Women have a number of types of female sterilization to choose from, and usually the method a woman chooses depends on other medical factors. Your physician or other healthcare professional can tell you which one is appropriate for you. Tubal sterilization requires a surgical procedure, but most women can undergo it on an outpatient basis (either in a hospital or clinic), under local anesthesia.

Many women are satisfied with female sterilization. However, it is important to know that women undergoing postpartum sterilization (female sterilization after giving birth) are 40% more likely to regret their decision than women undergoing sterilization at other times.

Nothing is 100% effective against pregnancy except abstinance. Someone who gets their tubes tied probably doesn't want to have to worry about being on some form of birth control.

I agree. There are too many risks with getting the tubes tied.

It would be better to get a Hysterectomy - leaving the ovaries. No chance of getting pregnant then.
The authorities have to be more open about who gets hysterectomies. There are many women who need/want one who can't due to age or whatever other reasons the doctor makes up.

In most cases, they won't let you have a hysterectomy until your uterus is literally falling out (as in my mom's case now).

You can always adopt if you decide you want kids later.

I heard that you're only at risk for 5 years afterwards (thats what my moms dr told her) but you could stay on birth control during that time.

and i think that as women get older, the risks of the side affects of birth control get higher, which is why they usually stop.

I guess nothing is 100% fool proof against nature. But there are still condoms out there.

Well if your married or have a significant other , it's safer and more effective for the man to get a vasectomy. But you do want to make sure that you together do not want anymore kids , and that he is comfortable knowing that he will not father anymore kids. The method is reversable but it is difficult.

no, it's not 100% effective, but i've had my tubes tied now for over 4 years and no babies so i'm not complaining! it wasn't actually that bad of a thing to go through to get it done. it was totally worth it.

Tubal ligation is extremely effective. Since there is a human being doing the proceedure on a human body, there cannot be a 100% guarantee. Done correctly it is indeed 100% effective.
