Of course cars from the 50's are safe.
Most were made with quality in mind. Today cars are made with planned obsolescence in mind.
Computers in cars today make it possible for the manufacturer to program exactly how long they'll run before the software creates problems no mechanic can diagnose.
I don't have anything newer than 1966 We just provide proper maintenance and repair whatever wears out and we're perfectly happy driving our safe-reliable car.
And don't believe everything you hear. Everybody thinks ALL old cars are heavy. As a matter of fact, government mandated 5mph bumpers make cars heavy. My Studebaker pickup weighs 1900 lbs. Less than one ton. For comparison, a Chevy S-10 "xtra cab" mini pickup weighs 4800 lbs., over 2 tons!
Some old cars were heavy, like my Belair, but others were light. My '55 VW weighs 2500 lbs.
There's quite a few lightweight old cars. Willys cars are all very light (and sought after by racing enthusiasts).

The cars from the 50's are a lot bigger and heavier than today's cars and will stand up pretty well in minor crashes against current lightweight, thin skinned models. However they don't have ABS braking systems so are a lot more likely to skid under heavy braking. The handling of cars, for the most part, has also improved greatly since the 50's. Additionally, the air bags in todys cars make a serious crash a lot more survivable than the cars of the 50's.

Yes and no. There is a lot of metal inside of the car that used to do a lot of damage in an accident. The horn ring on the steering wheel used to mess a lot of people up. The switches used to really do a lot of damage if you were to slam into them. The good point is they will take an accident fairly well. As long as you are wearing a seatbelt and you drive a lot more carefully due to clumsy handling and old drum brakes you will be fine.

A lot of older cars were made with heavier metal or steel. That made them a lot safer in an accident and why they didn't get as much gas mileage. I had a 72 toyota corolla, that I ended up rolling, but there was one dent in the whole accident, if I had done that now, I probably would have been hurt.
Personally I feel they are really safe.

cars from the 50's were all steel, not fiberglass or plastic like today. you are more likely to survive a crash in an old car than today's plastic toys.

No air bags ,,no abs....no collapsible steering wheel for God sake....most only have lap belts not good seat belts like today...no high back seats for neck protection. windshield wipers usually NOT electrict...they used vacuum...step on gas they stop..no kiddin......got more time i got more ....BUT..i love old cars...and say if u know that the old ones have limits drive them for fun,,,not a everyday driver....
