My dad has this program with cpl where he pays the same amount every month wich is 241. a month. Well at the end of the yr. he gets this bill of 2,471.00 and states, thats what he owes. This was not explained to him. Hes had this for over 5 yrs and nothing like this has happend but when we called them they said we have to pay or light will be cut off. So is there anything we can do to knock off that bill or is that final we have to pay it. I would like to know if anyone else had or has this problem?

You pay a set amount every month for so much energy. If you use more then that each month you have to make it up at the end of the year and pay the balance. Sometimes you don't use as much they should be giving you money back at the end of the year. This is why even though you think it is cheaper each month you should just pay the whole bill each month. Cause sometimes it might be 300.00 and sometimes it might be 150.00....sorry

I don't work for CPL, but I do work for another utility, and it sounds like he was on the budget plan and they never increased the budget to accommodate rate increases and additional useage. He would probably have to claim hardship to avoid paying it altogether, and have to prove it. But most utilities will work out a payment plan for something like that, so it isn't all due at once. And make sure you increase the monthly budgeted amount so that it's more reasonable. You can also request a second meter read to verify that the amount billed is accurate. They should also have a customer service rep that could come out and assess his electricity useage and show him where he can cut back, with energy efficient bulbs, and other tips and tricks.

If he's elderly or in need of constant medical assistance you can approach them with this data to work out a more reasonable payment plan which will avoid a disconnect. (And I am familiar with the plans as they are usually affordable options for people, but I found $241.00/per month to be a staggering figure. My bill is never a third of that amount even in high usage times of the year. Where do you live?)

I would suggest that you dispute the charges. You have to pay, or they will not hesitate to turn off the electricity but if they find it was a mistake you'll get credited what you overpaid. Keep all your receipts and see about getting a senior discount, if he's eligible. Good luck.

That sounds like a pretty healthy bill. I would ask my power provider to show me where I could have spent that much in addition to what I paid each month. What has changed in your home this year?
