Hey guys - I have an old computer that I want to get rid of. It's taking up space!

I hear throwing out a computer in the garbage is like one of the worst things you could ever do to the environment. However, I would like to get rid of it the proper way. Any suggestions? Its a desktop computer with all sorts of peripherals.

Generally the disposal company in your area has a place to take large items like refrigerators, etc. They can also accept PCs and monitors, though they have to treated separately because of the dangerous chemicals inside of them.

There is only one way to properly dispose of a working computer:

Give to someone not as fortunate as yourself. Many people will be thrilled to have their own computer, used or not.

If it's not operational, then taking it to a recycling center is the proper way. The only real environmental hazard is the CRT monitor.

First that's very cool of you to care. Most people, AND COMPANYS, just chunk them.

If it's newer and of some use, DL a free copy of some LINUX distro and donate it to someone. If you attend church talk to whoever in charge. You could also talk to a school councelor about a deserving person.

Take a look at this website also.. maybe it can be a nice starting point.

Maybe you could donate it to a needy child from a financialy challenged family to use as an internet PC to do homework.
Would only have to install the free NetZero software.

Disassemble all the parts and keep them in a box in case you need them. Better yet, sell it to your local computer shop.

in case you will throw it out. Take out the aggravating stress and open it and and ruin each and all of the disc interior. That way no longer something would be traceable reformatting would not eliminate each little thing.

Donate it to a school or some charity, they can use it but make sure you reformat it first to make sure you have deleted everything personal.
