we only have a large water cylinder which takes 3 hours on the highest temp on the thermostat to heat with gas or 2hours off peak electric no on demand gas water

Off peak will always be cheaper as the cost is reduced due to low demand during the off peak periods, make sure your storage tank or cylinder it well lagged (insulated) to conserve the heat.

When you look at the label on the W/H's they will tell you the estimated cost of useage based upon electricity and gas costing "X" per unit of gas or electricity. Find out what you pay per therm for gas and kilowatt for electricity from your utility bills and do the math. Simple enough! In most areas natural gas is much cheaper. But in those areas where there is no natural gas and you have to use propane the costs come closer together, but there are exceptions to the rule like some areas of rural Idaho I have lived in.

Gas is cheaper for water heating if you use a gas fired on demand water heaterThe price of gas and elecric is about the same on the west coast.

Gas is much cheaper to heat water with than electric.

Gas is cheaper every time especially if you opt for one of those new combi boilers, they merely heat what you are using rather like a huge shower unit. Hope this has been useful to you.
