We dont need more gun laws. They don't work. It is foolish to think... "hey, this doesn't work - we must need more of it!"
Gun control laws simply do not work. Why? Because law abiding citizens follow the gun laws, and criminals do not.
Even if there were some way to magically remove every single one of the almost 200 million guns in the US, criminals would STILL get their hands on guns. How? They would manufacture them (case in point, guy in England that modified almost 100 track and field starter pistols to shoot live ammunition). If they could not manufacture them, they would buy them outside the country and smuggle them in.
Here are some examples of what has happened with the crime rates in places with strict gun control laws.
In 1976, Washington, D.C. enacted one of the most restrictive gun control laws in the nation. Since then, the city's murder rate has risen 134 percent while the national murder rate has dropped 2 percent.
Maryland claims to have the toughest gun control laws in the nation and ranks #1 in robberies and #4 in both violent crime and murder.
20% of U.S. homicides occur in four cities with just six percent of the population – New York, Chicago, Detroit, and Washington, D.C. – most of which have a virtual prohibition on private handguns.
Many of the countries with the strictest gun control have the highest rates of violent crime. Australia and England, which have virtually banned gun ownership, have the highest rates of robbery, sexual assault, and assault with force of the top 17 industrialized countries.
As for the follow-on question about university shootings and armed students - not far from Virginia Tech, in January of 2002 two armed students DID stop a shooting rampage. From a news report at the time:
"The January incident in which a disgruntled student at Appalachian Law School, Peter Odighizuwa, allegedly shot and killed the school's dean, a professor and a student on campus before being subdued by two armed students, Mikael Gross and Tracy Bridges.
Gross and Bridges reportedly ran to their cars to fetch their own guns and returned to confront Odighizuwa, who surrendered.
Armed students ended a shooting rampage. What an amazing concept! A principal at another school ran to his car and got a pistol to stop a shooting in progress. News reports mentioned that he stopped it, but failed to mention that he was armed when he did it. I guess that part didn't fit in with their "guns are evil" story.

We don't need any more gun laws. What we need is education. Children can be taught to use guns safely and they can be taught to understand law and order if the government will just enforce the laws of the land. Do you think for one minute that illegal immigrants and gang members and drug dealers will ever give up their guns? People who are intent on taking over the USA want to take the guns from citizens so they can be free to continue in their lawless terrorism. Children grew up with guns for many, many years and didn't kill each other or anyone else. So why not educate the children and the adults and why not enforce the laws? If we do that then the sane people who have guns can live without fear and the criminals will be the ones giving up their guns.
There have been several studies that have shown that criminals will stay away from areas where people have been known to protect their property with guns. They also stay away from areas where the neighborhood watches are extremely active and where those who don't belong can't drive around the block casing the place without being watched and if warranted, reported to the authorities. There was one town that passed a law that everyone must own a gun and crime went down substantially. Don't give up your rights in the interest of safety. Give those who would interfere with your safety the scrutiny and reporting they deserve. Once we get serious about protecting our own property and about having the government do its job, we will not have to worry so much.

Laws are meaningless if we don't enforce them.
Like in Columbine, W VA tech, and others does anyone really think those guys if there were more laws on the books say "Hey I don't think I am going on this shooting rampage because there is another law on the books!" ?
How about we start teaching oh I don't moral to our children, accountability, respect for others or when a cop says stop you stop. Instead of using the race card or thinking you can do whatever you want.
Going through the mall you have all seen the demons being raised when they scream at their parents to 'F*** Off and die' or 'I wish you were dead' coming out of grade school kid.
Teachers who can't discipline children because of the parents will sue them is insane.
I know this a long way off from gun laws but I think we should seek the best answer not just the good enough to get by.

It is interesting that when a crime is committed using firearms, it is national news, some times for years.
But
there is a publication that has a monthly page dedicated to publishing 10 to 20 accounts/month of legal ownership of firearms in the U.S. having stopped a crime. This has been published for years and years. Those stories never make it beyond local papers, some times not ever that.
I'll believe people who want to subvert the Constitution for "safety" when they start working to get rid of automobiles which kill 15 to 20 people/hour, all day, every day. Many of those deaths are not accidents.
Ask your library for a magazine called "American Rifleman", printed by the oft maligned NRA. I believe they have a second magazine that is just about hunting, that also has the "Armed Citizen" feature.
Almost every gun law is the result of serious ignorance and a lack of experience. Some are deliberate attempts to pave the way for more repressive government, but sll lesd thst direction.

They are the result of the media and some politicians catering to an ill-informed crowd in hopes of some sort of reward.
Not just U.S.states and cities, but nations with restrictive laws which disarm all citizens to try to discourage a few bad ones, crime has increased in frequency and the level of violence. Something Australia is learning the hard way right now.
When government won't trust the people, something is wrong.
Universal marksmanship and safety training should be in our schools. About 6th. grade is the best age.

i've got on no account heard John Stassel being quoted as a valid source on something. you're so plenty extra probably to get shot in Texas than you're in Vermont. Memphis, New Orleans and Miami are a number of the extra violent cities in the rustic and all are in southern states with rather "unfastened" gun rules. in spite of the undeniable fact that, in case you opt for to characteristic that purely to gun rules then you definitely would be form of an fool with the aid of fact there is obviously so plenty extra to it than that.

We need more gun laws to reassure the inept and easily panicked masses that they're 'safe' even though they're really not, and to allow certain politicians to claim they've 'done something about gun violence' even though they really haven't. If they didn't have the illusion that big government was somehow protecting them personally they'd collapse sobbing hysterically and not be able to contribute to the economy by driving their Volvos in and out of the city and doing whatever else it is they do all day.

We don't need more gun laws in the USA. As you said, we have plenty of them. What we need to do is clear up the loopholes we have and start better enforcing the gun laws right more. Even so, as long as there is a black market, people will be getting guns when they shouldn't be able to get them.

Congressmen feel that they would be out of a job if they don't make more laws. The old ones are never enforced but a lot is made of the new laws for a short period of time. Then they are ignored.
