I'd say yes, especially if the 13-year-old will be in lots of situation where they might be able to use it, like walking home from school, or on the bus, or whatever, it's always a good back up plan. I got a cell phone when i was 15,, and i just love it and my parents let me do a lot more stuff on my own now. Just make sure you don't text like crazy. I bought a phone that was fairly cheap and didn't go on a plan, but use Pay and Talk instead. That way, I pay ahead, no phone bills, and i know when i've spent a certain amount from txting (not that I do it very much) and going on the net, etc.

I think for safety reason yes, a 13 yr old should have one. What we as adults fail to recognize it seems. Is the abuse these phone carriers and high tech companies are shoving down our throats everyday, and the worst of it all is that children are preyed upon the most through their targeted advertising. Making them feel like if you don't have the latest cutting edge, newest of all million dollar money maker we just put on the market,,,, well, you just are not where its at. Think of what your friends will think if you don't have the latest ringtone, or the latest texting devise, or your cell phone has no camera in it? Does a child really need all the frills that come with a cellphone?

I just bought my 11 year old a cell phone. I want to know that she can reach me any time she needs me. Also, I want to know that I can call her if I need to. The GPS is a plus, as well. She is involved in so many extracurricular activities. The cell phone is really helpful. Also, I like for her to carry it when she just goes out riding her bike. The world is different from when I was a kid. Back then, Mom just said "be home when the street lights come on". That was it--I used to ride my bike all over town and my parents never had to worry. These says, that is just not the case.

I would say, Speaking as a parent, that yes I think it would give the parent peace of mind and allow the child to keep in contact.

In principal I say yes but in experience there should be a call limit as my 13 year old (who is now nearly 17) ran up a £110 bill in a month. Basically a pay as you go type would have been more responsible.

Lesson learned.

Sure, they're great for emergencies, but they have to be responsible enough NOT to abuse the use by using them in classes or to cheat on tests in school. Turn them off during classes.

I carry mine everywhere I go. I turn it off when I'm in a movie, or a hospital, etc.

With all the perverts out there, cell phones can save a life. The camera feature can be helpful in many ways as well.

It depends on the family and finances. My child has had a cell phone since he was in 10 years old. All of his friends had cell phones earlier than him.

I don't think so. Especially when we get a $700 phone bill with over 30 pages worth of text messages on it from that 13 year old

Yes. Thirteen year olds definitely need a cellphone for many reasons, whether it's sports so that they can contact a parent or if they're at a friends house or even if they're taking a walk in the neighborhood just so you can check in on them! Life's much more complicated when your teen doesn't have a phone, and please, don't even think about a track phone. That's just embarrassing (for you and your child).
