It could be likely that your laptop may not have the specs to handle xp or vista, it would be cheaper to get a newer laptop as you would have to upgrade: ram, hard drive and much more, plus the cost of the OS.

Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade with Service Pack 2
£86.98
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition (Upgrade)
£119.98
not sure if your laptop would take vista also not sure if you can jump form 98 to vista
let me know if you are u.s. and get you prices
would be more cost effective to buy a new laptop
what model is your Compaq and have you ever upgraded it before if so what have you done

Being that you'd be upgrading the version of windows to another one, it shouldn't matter if it's a lap top or not.
My estimate is $180. The actual cost for upgrade software depends on where you buy it. But because you're upgrading from Windows 98 to Vista (that's the current version. Or do you think you can try for xp?) it might take more time. What do you mean Internet with it? It should be fine, if nothing goes wrong in the upgrade process. Just buy the software, and and read the directions. If you can't do it yourself (I imagine you just pop it in like the disc for a game), take it to a pro.

If it is a WIN98 laptop it may be possible that the processor and memory are not up to the requirements of either XP or VISTA. You have not really given us much information on the spec of the laptop - memory, CPU, clock speed, etc. It could be possible though that a new laptop would be cheaper than an upgrade to enable it to handle the more advanced operating systems.

I ve just upgraded my 2 year old laptop which was good then - XP Professional 256mb and 80gb
Now I ve upgraded whilst in the USA -- Vista Ulitmate 300+ Dollars and to 2GB Ram 100+ and Student Office (For word) 100+ i.e not at all cheap and Just go out and get a new one unless you are foolishy in Love with it like me.
My main and really only reason for doing it was because I figure it will last another 2 years and I ll wait for the ones with High definition , Blueray , built in GPS and Mp3 etc ...

There's almost no chance that old a laptop would be good for Vista. You'll just need a copy of Home XP. $90.

A windows 98 laptop will be slow! If you want to get it up to a good standard it may cost less than buying a brand new vista laptop.

At the moment i would not reccomend vista cos of all of the compatability issues, use XP
to upgrade just get a bigger hard disk and more memory, refer to windows help before purchising them togh cos your processor might not be compatable
to get wireless just purchase a USB WIFI dongle for about 20 UK pounds

Any upgrade will need an upgrade and possibly the upgrade will also need another upgrade. This is Windows, upgrade every couple of years, change computers every five . ANYTHING BUT WINDOWS.......try Linux.

Upgrading laptops is often not possible and if it is the cost is prohibitive. It's much cheaper to buy a new laptop -- I recommend www.toshiba.com www.lenovo.com www.hp.com www.dell.com
Shop online and find the one you like best.
