John Ford is my favorite director of all time! He won the most Academy Awards for his work (including Special awards) because he always used the camera to both tell his story and to paint his pictures...BTW his friend Victor McLaughlin had a son named Andrew V. McLaughlin who also directed films that look and sound just like John Ford's!

As far as current directors, I'd probably say Spielberg. He also uses the camera not just to tell us a story, but also as a medium of art!

Some have been mentioned . . . Stanley Kubrick, Ridley Scott, James Carmeron.

I would also add to the list: Akira Kurosawa, Alfred Hitchcock, John Sturges, Mel Brooks, Robert Wise, Terry Gilliam, Werner Herzog, Roland Joffe, and Christopher Nolan

As to why - well, I like their movies and styles

Harold Ramis

his work is hilarious. Caddyshack, National Lampoons Vacation, and Groundhog Day are brilliant. as well as his TV show The Office.

plus his awesome writing skills, with classics like Animal House, Stripes and Ghostbusters, makes him the best comedy creator ever IMO

plus he's not too shabby as an actor either

Tim Burton. His movies are always dark and somber, but good, well, maybe Batman is not so good.

Ridley Scott - I've never been able to forget his Blade Runner.

Ang Lee - Not on account of his martial arts movies, but for Sense and Sensibility.

Oh, god! There are so many.

Tim Burton and Guillermo Del Toro because they make such different looking movies.

Brian De Palma because he only makes the movies he thinks are good and he doesn't get caught up in fame.

And Steven Speilberg, because he has made so many good movies.

Clint Eastwood. Need I say more??

Francis Ford Coppola and Stanley Kubrik.

Peter Jackson, he is the cinematic genius behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I consider the trilogy some of the greatest movies of all time, and he is my idol among directors for making those fantastic movies.

Tim Burton, because he always chooses projects that are a little off beat or his perspective pulls them out of the parade line. . . I enjoy that, although he misses the mark sometimes. I have forgiven his Batman and moved on.
