I want to insulate the floor of my ground floor flat. The only option I have at the moment is to put some boards on the ceiling in the basement underneath. The problem is that the floor is wooden (it is 100 old building). Does anyone know what materials I should use to get the best effect?

Kingspan on the cellar ceiling, or put rockwool insulation up before you board the ceiling.

I would use paper backed fiber glass between the floor joists, paper side out, the paper is the vapor barrier. You can even staple building plastic over the insulation for added insulating qualities.

Another option is a radiant barrier covered foam or bubble insulation. The radiant barrier will block heat and act as a vapor barrier, the foam or bubble insulation has higher R Values than fiberglass, and it will also fit right in between the joists.

Pack the insulation in between the floor joists, put up a vapor barrier as well, and then board it over.

Try Airtec Double available from Screwfix website or can be cheaper on eBay. Strong plastic airbubbles with foil coating. I have used it to secondary insulate my loft. Attached it with an electric staple gun & sealed the joins with aluminium foil tape.

I believe Max J. I stay in a semi detatched bungalow, and such as you, my neighbours additionally paintings away plenty. I continually locate my bungalow is chillier while they are away, and warmer while they are living house. nonetheless, I like it while they are actually not living house, as they pinch each and every of the parking areas, plus, this is quieter, so shovelling slightly greater coal on my fireplace isn't a project.
