You will no doubt have a regular physical in the next year or two. She should ask the doctor then, that is the time to check these things out.
It's a real switch, the mother being worried. Usually the mothers are much calmer and the daughters are the ones freaking out. I was 13 when I got mine, my mother was 12, my daughter is 14 and a half and still hasn't (you wouldn't know it, she's 5'9" and well developed). The pediatrician told us that sometimes the really tall girls don't get it until very late, 17 or 18 even. She told us to stop worrying until high school graduation.
My daughter is funny... she's the only one of her friends not to have it, and she tells everyone she probably doesn't have a uterus (she watched an episode of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and there was a woman who never did get her period because she didn't have a uterus. My friend, an ob/gyn, said that is an EXTREMELY rare condition, so it's probably silly to worry about that too). I just think the waiting--and being different from your friends--can be hard.
There's also another theory about early v. late periods. When a girl lives in dangerous or fearful situations, she would be likely to mature more quickly (this happens with animals... it is to their benefit to grow up fast if threatened, in order to be mature and able to protect themselves). If you've had a comfortable, protected and well-nourished childhood, and are tall and willowy as well, perhaps with some Scandinavian or other northeastern European ancestors, you can get ready for a good long wait.

You could just tell her about your research and hope she'll listen. BUT, if you still end up having to see the doc, don't worry. Doctor's have spent years at medical school studying this sort of thing. It would have been a doctor that published the research you read! The doctor shouldn't examine you or think anything of you not starting yet because of your age. The fact that you're cool about it ought to go in your favour too. The doc will probably end up having a word with your Mum to chill her out a bit!

Everyone is different, you still have time. Lots of things can affect it. Your weight (if you under weight some people can't have periods). I wouldn't worry. If you don't feel comfortable talking to your mom, try a friend, or a friend's mom, even a teacher or nurse at school. Just give it time, be grateful, it's not all it's cracked up to be!

She should not have to take you because it just depends on "nature" when your period comes. One girl I know didn't start until she was 18. You should be happy you haven't gotten your period yet. Periods are hell for you and everyone around you.

i got them when i was 14, my mom got them when she was 16. so there is nothing wrong with getting your first period late. 13 is still young, you should tell your mom about your research, so that she wouldnt worry about it. good luck
