I think it's all really weird. Why is this? Why the need to be seen?

It's a bit exhibitionistic to be sure. And it's a way to attract the attention of like minds I suppose. But it has the potential to backfire. It can make someone the victim of a stalker, or if the info is explicit - whether sexually or politically, or in any other way - it can even get you fired.
I have a myspace page, but it's stripped down. I keep it to stay in contact with family and friends who have moved on.

I think people like attention and they only post things they want others to see..that they think is 'cool'
