During this long period all creatures had lots of time to evolve and get very specialized. That's what evolution does: specialize the species. When a comet hit the earth 60 million years ago, the climate changed rapidly. All specialized species could not addept to the new situation and died. Some species could addept, such as the few mammels that were around.

Dinosaurs of various types were around for millions of years. All species only lived for periods of time then evolved or were eaten or succumbed to the many problems and dangers of life. I can not think of any species of dinosaur that made it through the full age of the Dinosaurs.

I like ELF's answer--but I'd like to add to it ; that the rise of mammals had a big role. I always think that there are dynamics involve,like crashing astroids, new micro-organisms, and climatic changes...it's never one thing. However ,in four words ,we could say it was "An act of God".
