theres avril, evanescence, lac...... ooops :D

The first that came to mind will be

HEART - American sisters who totally rocked the stage with their songs, Never, Crazy On You, These Dreams, Alone....Great guitar skills on Nancy with raspy vocals from Anne.

Deborah Harry or "Blondie", the pretty lass rocked the world with "heart of glass" , "Call Me" and The Tide is High.

Then, theres
Cyndi Lauper, I consider her a rock singer due to her vocal range though shes relatively popular in the New Wave era.
Sang "time After Time", "True Colours", She Bop, Goonies Theme, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun " etc. Totally outstaged Cher when they sang a duet on "Turn Back Time".

If your idea of metal includes punk, check out Beth Ditto from the Gossip.
Going back in time, Elkie Brooks did half the vocals in the excellent Vinegar Joe.
After the plane crash that killed Ronnie van Zant, and before recruiting his brother, Lynyrd Skynyrd cleverly sidestepped comparisons by doing a couple of typically excellent albums as the Rossington-Collins Band, with a lady called Dale Krantz, whose voice was as feminine but rough as Ronnie's was masculine but smooth, and every bit as good.
Kim Carnes had a technically dire but irresistably cute rock voice.
Janis Joplin was the original female heavy rocker. Maggie Bell was a less well known Scot with a similar style.
Carole King did a nice soft rock album called Tapestry, with tracks you still hear on the radio such as I Feel The Earth.
Suzi Quatro did some great Rocknroll in the '70s e.g. Can The Can.
Kiki Dee's I Got The Music In Me is a classic rocker, although not her usual style.
Joni Mitchell was a great soft rock singer in the '70s.
More up to date, Sheryl Crow and Pink both rock harder than most male rockers.
