Although Baby Boomers are the largest group in US history to become Senior Citizens they are far more healthier than any other group before them. They have a longer life expectancy as well! Many Baby Boomers are expected to work into their late 70's and some even longer.
What the Baby Boomers need is more opportunities to stay healthy, active and employed if they so wish. The longer that the Baby Boomer can stay healthy and active the less strain there will be on our health care system and social security system. The demographics of Skilled Nursing Homes has already started to change. Many nursing homes are taking in young people who have been in car accidents, drug and alcohol related disabilities just to keep their doors open.
20 years ago when I started working in Long Term care our clients were between the ages of 70 to 100. Now in many nursing homes the age span is 19 to 115, with the average age being around 60.
We as a country need to change our way of thinking about our people who reach 65+. Just think about it only 100 years ago a person who was 50 was considered to be very old!

As an over 50 person, I agree with daisymae. We need
houses that are easier to live in, no stairs, easy kitchens,
easier ways of downsizing into those houses, better
designed grocery stores, with smaller packaging for foods
and other products.
I would like to see clothes designed by us and for us
instead, of using 20 something models for those clothes.
Also more make-up and hairstyles for our age group.
Stores and merchandizers should be more aware of our
needs.
We need better ways of being together with our own
age group.

I'm with Daisymae on this....better and reasonable health care, communties and houses that are geared to those of us who would simply like to downsize, and grocery stores that would recognize our needs for smaller sizes and quantities....and not charge extra. Boomers and seniors are such a large market, yet retailors and the like are failing to take notice of our wants and needs...and the opportunities we present.

I would like to see more down-sized homes suitable for aging without having to live in an exclusive senior community.
Just like the developers put apartments and townhouses in residential areas, why not also have smaller homes so we can stay in a mixed populated community instead of a separate section just for seniors only? I still like living in my own house.
Also, it would be nice to have a section in the grocery store for seniors so we won't have to keep buying large "family size" foods. You should see my freezer.
After that comes health needs. We need more geriatric doctors who care for this vast segment of the population.
Other than that, its all good.

There are some housing areas here that are all sold by one corp. they are geared for elderly, lower counters, ramps in and out and beautiful maintained yards, wider hall ways and doors, bars in the bathrooms and slide out drawers in the kitchens, they are gorgeous, all repairs are taken care of by a maint. crew and when the person passes the corp. buys the house back. I took care of an elderly lady there and she could easily get around in her chair and all the closets had extra storage with shelves and lower rods. They also had some tri plexes in the same area. Her utility room was huge with built in folding tables. It was a beautiful home and two bedroom with a large living, dining area and big kitchen and two baths and a two car garage. The same corp also just built a huge multi story complex for all levels of care from assisted to nursing. Very private and quiet a beautiful home and it was only 3 years old.
She and her hubby had moved there from a huge old farm.
