Has there ever been an instance where the two respective League champions from the previous season BOTH failed to make the playoffs the next? I ask because that is a real possibility this year concerning the Tigers and Cardinals.

Yes, several times. Most recent is 2005 Series, when the White Sox and Astros both failed to make it in 2006.

Many times. You have to remember that before 1969, there were only two teams that made the playoffs every season. There was an AL champ and an NL champ and they played in the World Series.

YES. You have to go a long way back. 1935. Karangos and Lupizic filled the bill. Only once in some 100 years.

Not an easy feat. Cannot see it happening agin.
