It was a War started by the Aggressive Nazi Fascist policies of Adolf Hitler and his will to dominate Europe. It was masterminded by a man called "Erich von Manstein" (Eric fon man-stine, phonetically in English) who designed the 'Blitzkrieg' military tactic.

The Fascists' main opposition surrounded them, as it did in World War One. They had several powers aligned with them that formed the 'Axis'. At first it was mostly just Italy, but later Japan and fascist French people called 'Vichy (pronounced; Vish-ee) as well. Other nations that sympathised with the Fascists included Spain (Nationalists just coming out of civil war), but the Spanish never really supported the Germans. Pockets of old Republican resistance were still fighting with them anyway.

The other 'group' were the 'Allies' who were a united force of many different countries with different goals and ideologies that merely wanted to stop the spread of fascism. These were made centrally of England and it's commonwealth, France and the USSR, and later the USA thanks to Japan.

The war itself took place on several parts of the world. Each part formed a 'Campaign' because several battles took place in that area.

These were:
The North African Campaign (Germany and Italy vs England andThe Commonwealth, France and later the USA)
The Western Front (France and partially England vs Germany)
The Eastern Front (The USSR vs Germany)
The Pacific Theatre (The USA, Australia and New Zealand vs Japan)
The Chinese Theatre (Nationalist China, Communist China and the USSR vs Japan and Manchuria)
The Second Western Front (The USA, England and the Commonwealth and returning French vs Germany and Vichy France)

I know there are a lot, and I may have missed a couple of the smaller ones, but it wasn't 'World War' for nothing! Also, There were lots of participating countries that I did not mention but their contributions were not as large.

The result was that Germany lost all bu the first Western Front, and Japan lost both of it's campaigns as well. The Allies won the War by completing the Siege of Berlin (taken by the USSR) and forcing Japanese surrender (By dropping nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki).

Famous Generals who participated in the war and are worth researching are:

Axis:
Rommel (Germany)
Von Manstein (Germany
Yamamoto (Japan)

Allies:
Montgomery (Britain)
Wavell (Britain)
Patton (The USA)
Eisenhower(The USA)
Zhukov (USSR)
Rokossovski (USSR)

Well, there is some dispute about when it actually began--some historians date it from the 1930 invasion of Manchuria by Japan, while others date it from the invasion of Poland by the Nazis nine years later.

It was, indeed, truly global in scope, with the Japanese Empire dominating much of Asia and the Third Reich occupying a huge chunk of Europe.

The civilian suffering was truly of epic, and nightmarish, proportions. In the countries occupied by the Axis powers, the populations were treated as conquered peoples have been throughout history--almost as aliens in their own land, their sole purpose being to serve their "masters" from the countries occupying their own.

Even in Allied nations, there was a great deal of misery, particularly in Britain and the Soviet Union. London was bombed repeatedly, and not just the docks and industrial areas--during this war, civilians became fair game as well as military targets--on both sides (consider the fire bombing of Dresden).

World War II was, in my opinion, certainly one of the defining events of the twentieth century.

It would help if you could be a bit more specific....

The years leading up to WWI, the begining of the war before US involvement, the war in Africa, the war in Europe, the war in the Pacific and its aftermath are all pretty much chapters on their own.

It would take 5 years to tell you "everything" about WWII.

g-day!
