In the historical sense the space is quite recent, later Middle Ages I think. Words used to be just written running together and of course only very educated people could read anyway. When the Gothic script developed, it was very hard to read, but with social changes and the development of the printing press, more people learned to read and spacing, punctuation and capital letters became more standardised.
