Sure I was around, but I did not think anything of it. The only thing that brought my attention to it as a child, was my father mentioning that this Verwoerd guy had just messed things up. When he was younger, he lived in a mixed neighbourhood and that was sort of normal way back then. Of course, English and Afrikaans speaking people were, by and large, on different sides of the fence, especially at election time. Then there were lots of arguments and fights, but more because of "my father is a UP supporter, and your father is a Nat" sort of thing. David Kramer, who grew up with my brother, reported on his website that the English speaking children often had fist fights with the Afrikaans children. It is in Afrikaans, although he is English speaking, see his interview:

Ask me questions if you like. You can email me.

I can't remember that much, but what I do remember is that we could actually go for walks alone with friends without being worried about anything and I used to like to go to our parks and play there with my friend without an adult, but these days there aren't any good parks left and it's too dangerous even if there were. I was born in 1985, so I was about nine when that started changing. I was hoping it would be for the good, but sometimes it doesn't look that way anymore...
