Unfortunately, our presence in Iraq has created many enemies that we didn't never had until the real occupation. Yes, we have Al-Quaeda (a very small presence in Iraq... but a dangerous one) and multiple insurgent groups that consist of former Iraqi army and just ordinary citizen paramilitary and some Al-Quaeda copy cats. There might be some Iranian weapons specialists that might be supplying and training Shiite groups.

No one has really defined success (or the administration tells us that by divulging any hard core information would "support the enemy" so I guess this means the definition falls under that paranoid statement). This is really baffling to me... we have an occupation without a clear exit strategy or set guidelines to call this a success. If success means that "all terrorists will be dead or imprisoned" is just so ridiculous and way off of reality.

This has truly been a fiasco. We have the most powerful and technologically advanced military facing a bunch of thugs whose most advance weapon is an IED. We have been there longer than we fought the German and Japanese armies... modern and strong militaries. I am really astounded that there are still saying this has been great for our country.

The enemy are those who stand in the path of neo-liberalism march to installing a puppet government that will be in servitude towards the corporate interests of America.

The Iraqis that are fighting the American occupation of Iraq are no different than what are forefathers did with the British invasion.

Bill Schneider, a CNN analyst, concluded from their poll that the more educated people are, the less they believe in the connection between 911 and Saddam Hussein. The lower the education level of the polled person, the more likely they are to believe that there exists a connection. The least educated are the young, the high school students who are cannon fodder for the war in Iraq. It is no accident that the nation's political leaders invoked “911” and “Saddam Hussein” as often as possible. The media deliberately channeled the fallacious connection directly to the people and without question. Bush and Cheny's message was clear: “You are either with us or you are against us”. And we are going to fight the “war on terror” in Iraq. Never mind that Iraq had nothing to do with 911. Never mind that were no weapons of mass destruction. There were, however, plenty of Bush and Cheney weapons of mass distraction. What did matter was that the people internalize the connection between Iraq and 911. And, internalize the connection, they did. Critical thinking skills go a long way in recognizing and rejecting state-corporate propaganda. Unfortunately, critical thinking is not a strong skill outcome of the US education experience.

George W Bush has made the enemy every citizen, every Muslim, every terrorist, the Iraqi government, the Iraqi police, all neighboring countries, many of our allies and the entire earth. I know some of these are not in Iraq, but they send their "soldiers" there to kill Americans and civilians. He has made much of the world seek the destruction of America. Just look at how the Chinese and Russian forces train together on Russian soil and think about the meaning of that.

There is no longer any definition of success, except on a distant battlefield called Armageddon. This president has led us into perdition, and tribulation. By his hand the good name of democracy and of America has been destroyed.

It's a mystery.

It appears that the enemies are the terrorists, but the Iraqi government and the US seem more focused on the Sunnis, but give the Shi'a terrorists a lot more leeway. No doubt we're going to see problems from this biased plan in the near future (More blowback).

Those words apply to all men, it doesn't exclude Iraqi's. These are the words our whole society is based on. That all men want to be free, because God created them that way.
The definition of success is a government that can stand on it's own and defend these rights.
The war on terror is not a war on a country, or a group of people. It's a war on an ideology that puts it's boot heels on men's necks in the name of religion so they can be controlled in every possible aspect of their lives. The only way to defeat this ideology is to show the average man living under these conditions that there is a better way.
The whole region surrounding Iraq is a breeding ground for this ideology. By doing what we did, we dropped the biggest and most lethal bomb in our arsenal, we dropped democracy on them.
The problem is it takes time. Even in our own country, it took almost a dozen years after the British surrendered before our Constitution was ratified and the permanent form of government we have now was started. We are a culture that is used to conflicts being resolved in an hour long television program. We are accustomed to instantaneous results. We need to be patient.

Good question. According to the congressional resolution to invade Iraq, I thought that the enemy was Hussein's government. We toppled him so I guess we succeeded.

As to why we're there now, guess I don't know. Maybe though we need a new authorization of use of force since in any normal way of looking at things the original with is done, complete, finito. That way they could tell us who is our enemy and how we will know if we have ever won.

The enemy is the people shooting at the soldiers. Success is when the enemy stops shooting at the soldiers. That is all that matters to the soldiers over there. They do not care why this particular person is shooting at them. They just want to get home alive.

Enemy: anyone who threatens the lives and freedoms of innocent people

Success: Quelling the internal fighting and stabilizing the economy and government enough so that the country can function on its own, without the presence of foreign entities

The enemy is IGNORANCE --- that the US invaded in order to benefit corporate interests (i.e. Halliburton) and the sooner they stop fighting the sooner the US imperialists will get out. After that, who cares?
