That the world as it is today is more selfish because there are more people in it versus years ago when it had less people. Therefore, one was able to be kinder, more thoughtful, and less selfish. Parents had more time to teach and show their children how to behave in public and towards one another.

Do you believe people just don't care period and are out for themselves? Since things or rules are no longer black or white but gray, anything goes as long as it does not cause harm?

Or are both a cop out to responsibility?

Nope. I have lived in China, the population there is 1,321,851,888. People are kind , helpful, considerate and supportive of each other. There is a positive energy in the air you feel the minute you step off the plane. People smile and say hello. Its noisy but its not an angry noise, people yell at each other but not because they are fighting.

Society works together, there is a cohesiveness to create a better, strong, healthy country for everyone. The business people often express concern for the peasants, because they dont yet have access to a lot of social services.

It is common for business people to donate the equivelent of 1 million US to charities EVERY year.

At a population of 301,139,947 the USA has a long way to go before catching up with the numbers in China and the demand for housing and food.

Population has nothing to do with it, unless it is so extreme that people are having fist fights over food and climbing over each other to walk down the streets. And not unless there is isnt enough food for the population. The USA and Canada have more than enough to feed everyone in the country and to provide housing for everyone, they choose not to.

Excess creates greed. When there is more to be had people want more, more than anyone else, all the toys.

Aquisition has become synonomous with success.

Its society. Our society is based on consumption and greed. Dog eat dog. No one has a social conscience these days.

My theory is that the younger generation were for the most part raised spending their time in front of the computer or the television. The interacted very little with real people, and everyone knows that computer games do NOT teach moral responsibility or compassion for others.

Its all about kill or be killed, conquer or be conquered. The person with the most toys wins. It created spin offs like school bullies, gangs, etc

We put our children into organized sports where competition is the name of the game. Look at how crazy some soccer parents are when their kid is playing. They lost perspective, our society has lost perspective.

The people who are my childrens peers werent parented very well IMO. They were never "socialized". They were raised in sterile boxes that in effect were "sensory deprivation" tanks.

Most of those kids would be home along in an empty house devoid of supervision until 9 or 10 PM when their parents would finally wander home from their activities, sports, the gym, the pub, the mall.

What did the kids do? Watched TV and played computer games.

When the parents were home there still wasnt any interaction with their children.

Its definitely the "me" generation, because it was raised by the worst "me" generation of all. Parents in the 1980's.

Dr. Spock apologized for being responsible for a whole generation of complete sh*t heads because their parents followed his "teachings". The man was a complete idiot.

So blame it all on him. Too many people didnt have the sense to read his book and ask themselves, "what is wrong with this?".

Parents should have been reading Piaget not Spock.

Unfortunately I tend to believe people just don't care and have become too engrossed with "Me'ism". Not to mention old fashioned value systems are not the norm these days and exist and are taught only in a modicum of homes. Respect for others and civility seem to be a thing of the past. Daggum shame!

I agree, more people in the world means more competition for fewer resources on the one hand, and more competition for greater material wealth on the other. This competition changes the focus from 'we' to 'me', which turns into survival of the meanest. It's weird that the more we have, the less willing we are to share. However, this is short-term survival, humans have come this far only through collaboration, and are likely to move forward only with greater cooperation than before, but this isn't obvious unless you are a student of history.

Things were better 50 years ago, when I was growing up. People had time for each other, kids weren't so nasty, and it was safe to go out at night.
