As bumble bee said, it depends on the species of fish. Some fish prefer great water quality, others poor water quality. I would do some research on the fish you are trying to breed and see what the necessary requirements are. Things such as barometric pressure can even come into play sometimes as in the case of cories. Here is a website that may help you out in relation to the species you are trying to breed.

i think alot depends on what fish u have in the tank. some eat others and also there own. there are nursery nets to separate the babies but u prob b better asking at the fish shop. don't mean the one where you get chips.proper environment, like in water. lol

A pair of livebearers from juveniles conditioned to 2" will start to breed. A pair of cichlids conditioned on live food will breed from2"-4". I once bred a pair of rainbow cichlids[multispinosa's] from 4".

all fish are different.

Water quality eg clean ph etc and temp are the most important.

some fish are easy to breed others are harder

Good clean water, high protein food. That usually helps, at least it did for my goldfish.
