You did not pick a good example. For safety reasons, people should not drive bare foot. It is not safe. It is a good law.

There are stupid outdated laws. Its my understanding that in most states, every year there are tons of motions to abolish whatever law. As apparently every state has hundreds of archaic laws from the past 200 years.

But the driving barefoot thing? Not a good example. It has been shown in many ways that this is unsafe. So usually a persons shoes would be on the floor. If you stopped quickly or had to swerve the shoes could move. Even if one did not wedge under the gas or brake pedal they could still interfere.

Studies have shown that in itself driving barefoot is dangerous. Much has to do with applying even pressure on the pedals, not just the ball of the foot.

Though probably not you statistics show that those who choose to drive barefoot are young, bad drivers, not thinking that this is not a good idea, etc. Then this ties in with insurance. I personally know someone who got into an accident, the officer noted her shoes were on the passenger side and her insurance company refused the claim.

I was reading this thing the other day that was talking about how wearing flip flops have become more and more a thing. Staistics are showing enough (even if wearing them) to show that if in an accident when it comes up in court they lose even if it was not their fault. Any lawyer worth his salt will bring this up.

Yes there are funny laws but driving barefoot is not one of them.

How about this one in Massachusetts: A corporation cannot be held liable for manslaughter for more than one thousand dollars!

Unfortunately, it's not funny. The company that provided the epoxy that held up the panels that collapsed in the new "Big Dig" tunnel and killed a woman... that company has just been indicted for corporate manslaughter, maximum penalty for which is a big whopping $1,000.

Turns out the law was last revised in EIGHTEEN NINETEEN (that's 1819).
