I'll be honest, I'm not a horror fan. But right now, I'm reading the 'Dark Tower' series--I'm on book 4 ('Wizard and Glass'), and it's fantastic.
My favourite King short story is 'The Doctor's Case.' It's a Sherlock Holmes story, and excellent. I also recommed 'LT's Theory of Pets.' We have a recording of him reading it, and it's actually as funny as it is creepy.

My favorite is actually a series, "The Dark Tower"
It's freakin' awesome! I also liked Salem's Lot and Cell.
Really you just can't go wrong with any of his books. If you like his short stories read, "Everything's Eventual"

The stand, by no means a short story, over 12 hundred pages!

The Stand, by far, as being the book most entirely possible, and therefore the scariest.
It and Pet Sematary were both terrifying in the more traditional horror type.

I deffinatley loved IT the best of all the books I have read. It is super freaky but not in a like gory way or anything, it just gets in your mind and makes you wonder...excellent book!

I liked The Running Man, mainly because I don't like longer works.
If I had to pick a longer work, The Stand may be the best.

I've only read his short story collection, "Night Shift", and that was a long time ago. I remember liking most of them. I think Jerusalem's Lot was pretty scary.
