As soon as they use the word "but" - it means that WHATEVER came before it is MEANINGLESS ;);)

I think a person just worries that they will be accused of being a racist while they generalize a particular group of people.
And ArgumentStarter, not all white people are racist.
Pointing fingers and calling people racist (especially a whole race) is not helping the whole human race to live together peacefully.
We should be over all this by now.

It generally depends what they say next. Sometimes people add 'I'm not a racist' if their words could be seen as having a double meaning or they want to avoid offending someone whilst putting across a non-PC point of view.
However, for every over-cautious person who wants to make sure their words aren't mis-interpreted, there are ten who say 'I'm not a racist, but...' to mask what are genuinely racist statements.

Yes that mean they are a racist , because if they wasn't a racist they wouldn't s "but.....".
They just say " I'M not a racist , but...." as a way to cover up for there racist comments, so they can be in the clear to say something that a racist would say .

Nah. It just means there's a comment coming that could be viewed as racist by one of the overly sensitive types. You know, the people who are always itching to pull out the race card.
Although I have seen it used for irony. Like, "I'm not racist, but I hate blacks."

Usually that statement is made right before they make a racist statement. That means they are racist.

We all are racist to some degree; some are more racist than others. It doesn't make it right, but we are human and certainly not perfect.

"I'm not a racist but..." is a well known code phrase. In most (if not all) cases the person will turn out to be a bigot

Only if they tell you how many friends they have that are minorities and how often they are over their house.
To the person above me, not all white people are racist just like not all black people are ghetto.
