It was terrible to see those heads being chopped up and thrown down those long flight of stairs... mayan civilization. Did they really do such hideous things?

I did see the movie Apocalypto - and granted I think there were certainly some poetic license taken with events - I think it was fairly accurate. According to the archealogical studies of the glyphs and writings from that period, as well as events recorded by the Spanish when they arrived, 'such hideous things' did indeed occur - perhaps not exactly as depicted in the movie.
A previous responder, Aleema D, seems to speak from denial, ignorance and prejudice with the comment "there's no real proof that they did those things - Just like there's no real proof that the Bible's events happened"
There certainly are evidences that indicate these things happened, both in the Old World and the New World. I would certainly agree that we may not have all the details or motives, but there is sufficient evidence to give an idea of such events.

Yes, while the Europeans were butchering peasants in religious wars, the Mayans were butchering villagers in religious sacrifice.
At the end of the movie, with the arrival of the more technologically advanced Europeans, what the Mayans were doing to the villagers the Europeans were going to do to the Mayans. The Mayans were going to receive a dose of their own medicine at the hands of the Europeans.
This was a beautiful example of 'Historical Relativity' in that one civilization is no better or worse than another civilization.

Yes they did. It was god worship. There are some things in our time and culture that are also hideous, just read the news about a serial rapist or killer.

You know in Turkey,if you are caught D.U.I,,9 out of 10 times you are hung....
In one Country,can't remember it,,,but if you are caught stealing,,they cut off the hand you stole with..If caught again,,they cut the other one off....
Another form of capital punishment in Nigeria, besides flogging is amputation. A young boy was found guilty of stealing money and he had his hand cut off
