They are relatively same latitude. For that matter, so are Italy and Washington. I am researching and I believe this has something to do with proximity to water bodies, but I'm not completely sure. Any clues would help. thanks!

First, look at the ocean current we call the "gulf stream". This oceanic current is part of the earth's way of redistributing energy from the equator to the pole. The gulf stream carries an enormous amount of heat from the equatorial Atlantic and Carribean up the East coast of the United States and Canada and then it bends East over to Europe.

So why doesn't the Gulf Stream heat up the Eastern United States and Canada?

The prevailing winds in the middle-latitudes in the northern hemisphere are from the west. In fact, they're called the "prevailing westerlies". These winds mean that the Eastern US and Canada's weather is dominated by the conditions upstream, which is the cold, dry air that comes from the middle of the continent.

Europe's weather is also dominated by the westerly flow in mid-latitudes and so it takes advantage of the the heat that's been transported to it's doorstep in the form of the gulf stream. So the weather in England in January will be milder than the weather in Quebec or Newfoundland or New York.

It's because London is almost completely surrounded by water, which moderates it's tempurature. You'll also notice that London isn't as hot in the summer as cities at about the same latitude that are further inland.

Whether any particular city in Canada is comparable to London, depends where in Candada it is: it's a big place, much bigger than England (or the whole UK for that matter).

For instance, Edmonton, AB, is an inland city at approximately the same latitude, and has a highly variable climate (very cold in winter, very hot in summer). While Victoria, BC is an Island City off the west coast with a moderate climate fairly comparable to London.

It has to do with proximity to the ocean, warm ocean currents, and the prevailing wind, the westerly.
Britain gets the benefit of the ocean and gulf stream.
French Canada does not.

You might find it helpful to do a search on "maritime climate" and "continental climate" as part of your research.
