Depends whether they are live bearers or egg layers.
Male live bearers generally have a long pointed "fin" on their undersides just in front of the tail fin, they are also generally more colourful than the female. If you have males and females in the tank just watch them and you'll soon see which is which. The females are often larger and considerably deeper bellied.
Egg layers are often very difficult to sex although their behaviour may give a clue. If males and females are noticeably different the male is generally the more attractive fish with more vivid colours and larger fins.
Your best bet is to get a book and study the pictures.

All fish are different. In alot of fish breeds, males are usually bigger and more colorful. But this does not hold true for all fish! Some females are bigger than males. It's hard to say. All fish are different!

Most of the time, the male will gbe the more agressive one, as well as the "prettiest".
Most bettas sold in fish stores, for example, are male, because female bettas are boring.
