yeah, same as this: why does cargo travel by ship and a shipment by car? and why are apartments called that when they're actually close together? hehe . . . i guess terms become diluted over time, and the "stands" were once places to stand, not sit.

Stadiums may be all seater now but they never used to be.
There was a time when at least three sides of a gound were standing.
