Rant about the "evils" of the British Empire without addressing the things their own government has done andi s doing right at this moment?
What are they doing in Iraq? What did they do to the Native Americans?
I'm sorry but I'm fed up of reading "The Brits are all evil because of Ireland and India" from people whose country is right now oppressing and killing people in some of the poorest parts of the world for oil. Its blatant hypocrisy.
I say "some Americans" because I know that most are not like this.

Firstly, anyone has the right to criticise the British Empire, considering it was evil. Just because they don't criticise their own country doesn't automatically remove their right to criticise, it severely impacts their message but doesn't remove it outright.
Seondly, the British Empire was evil and perpetrated attrocities in countries, among others, Ireland and India. And if you cant admit that, then according to your logic you can't pass comment on others.
Thirdly, John Doe, America didnt lead to the fall of the British Empire, there was no Empire when the US revolted. Democracy, The German Empire and Nazi Germany led to the fall of the British Empire.
Fourthly, you know what really gets the former members of the Empire fed up, how the UK show no remorse over what it has done, it never has. Germany and Austria have showed remorse, nationalism in those countries is minuscule and the purview of the far right. The same in France, who also have the burden of empire from Algeria. Yet the UK, nothing.
English people more so than Welsh, Northern Irish or Scottish harp on about how they ruled most of the world and you should be proud of it. Proud of repressing peoples on every continent bar South America and Antarctica.
And just in case, I despise the PIRA and all forms of it as much as the once mighty British Empire. So if you want to bad mouth the US for expressing a valid point, even if they ignore the atrocities that have been committed in their name, start with Irish people and see how far you get.

I am not in any way one of those you describe. The British are our strongest ally and are with us in Iraq too. People just seem to like to criticize I think. The native americans were pretty badly mistreated by us to be sure but then so were the native peoples of all territories settled by the Brits, Germany, and so on. I try not to point fingers at others, individually or nationally because things that happened in the 1800's can't really be understood in these times. The national interests of England are not fully understood by us either. Don't let it get to you, some people will always disapprove of things without ever checking their own back yard.

America should pack it in. No one needs them because they are a paranoid nation. Consider this. A bunch of terrorists (I must point out that there have always been terrorists everywhere) - have made them send out an army of a million soldiers and tons of equipment and attacked the wrong country and have got tied down in the Arabian desert and the mountains of Afghanistan chasing Omar Mullah, a semi blind Mullah and OBL - both with a rag tag army with rusty AK47s - totalling no more than 500 men. No tanks, no planes and no armour.
Six years later the Americans are contemplating "DEFEAT". The whole nation is in denial and near total bankruptcy.
Housing markets and stock prices are collapsing daily such that the federal reserve is printing $s by the ton and propping up people left right and centre.
A president and cabal elected who cannot figure a way out and the population fed propaganda daily such that they know nothing of whats going on. JC matey!

Because they don`t think about what they`re saying .
If we can be blamed so can they . Their Ancestors are the same as ours as they were a colony of Britain, if you judge responsibility in this way they in fact should have a bigger share of guilt from the past , as Americans were mostly European immigrants , so while we are only connected to British evils they are connected to the evil of Europe in its entirety plus Americas Acts of aggression since their independence
Whats that saying about people who live in glass houses

oh please....give the 10pts to the bloke who had us all reaching for the dictionary. What a tirade of babble and froth...did anyone actually read it? You patronising git...do you think that by using as many words out of the dictionary (which dictionary do you prefer macmillan or oxford - I make the assumption that you are a macmillan man...oxford being the choice of plebians) that we would all stroke our chins and say 'follow him, he knows words of 3 syllables of more'. The first answer was scary......yours is plain rude. The questioner did say 'minority'.....as with all countries there are minorities of people who do nothing but hate and blame. I find these ideas are born out of ignorance as much as anything and are usually stirred by people that use big words to make a point who ought to know better.
Thank you Miss Moonlight for a useful debate, it serves to highlight the utter ignorance and hatred that exists, even here.

I've never ever heard any American discuss or refer to the Brits as evil. Perhaps in Irish or Indian communities only, but certainly not in my presence, nor have I heard anything on television.

I will in some other place defend the British Empire which was not without fault but better than most and often that which has replaced it. However with the greatest of respect to the questioner I feel that USA lost the right to criticise the old Empires after Vietnam. remember USA though it's interests were threatened and wanted to retrieve the situation

I never rant about the Brits...they have been strong, true and steadfast friends of America. Our grandfathers and fathers are burried side by side with the Brits on the beaches of Normandy.

You admit you know that "most" are not like this. So why are you overgeneralizing about Americans then? There are people all over that share that opinion; it's not about being an American. You're trying to make an issue that is not there... isn't there enough conflict in the world without you trying to concoct your own?

Americans are embarrassed about the British Empire because they are a part of it. The American war of independence didn't get rid of the colonists, it entrenched them - with a British Aristocrat as president. The Navaho would really like the British colonists to go home - whatever they call themselves.
