I am not a Republican. I do not pretend to understand the right wing mentality that says diplomacy should be abandoned in favor of sending in the Marines.
A war, especially the mess in Iraq, either goes forward or backward.
The republican mentality will say that bombing Iran is a requirement to keep weapons away from Iranian insurgents. Following the same "logic" Syria, Lebanon and Palestine will be next.
Of course we will not bomb the Saudis, we need the oil.

I don't think this idea can be labeled a Republican belief. The fact that we are faced with this decision is a result of the shortsightedness of the Bush administration when the decision was made to invade Iraq.
Conquest takes much more than just sending an army into the battlefield. American politicians have led America into losing battles since WWII. Politicians are not conquering generals. They don't understand the scope of war. They don't realize the void that is created when a regime is toppled.
When the USA entered WWII, all the battle lines had already been drawn. All the allegiance had already been made. We knew the enemies size. We knew where all the enemies support came from. We knew where all the war production was located.
To win or conquer an enemy, you must not only topple its leadership, you must also eliminate its support and supply of arms, equipment, and manpower. And, when your enemy has an enemy who is also your enemy, you must be able to destroy that enemy as well.
Bush created a battle zone in an area which is surrounded by countries who have been openly against the USA. It was shortsighted of him not to realize that these countries would see this as an opportunity to covertly engage in aggression against our troops. It was shortsighted of Bush not to see that these countries would see this as an opportunity to take over the land in which he created a void in control.
The invasion of Iraq destabilized the entire middle east. There is only one way to stabilize the region that would satisfy the origin goal of the Bush administration. That would be to conquer the entire area by invading every country that opposes US policy.
I don't see this as an option the American people are willing to take. Do you?

I also get the feeling that they think a war with Iran would be over in no time.
Now where have we heard that before?
