I bought a used car with a remote engine starter. I didn`t really drive it but started the engine everyweek for few minutes. Last week I found that the battery seemed to be discharged and the remote engine starter kept giving noise. I jumped started the car but today the same problem occured again! Anyone know why? What should I do?

Thank you for your valuable answers below. If it was the battery that gave the problems. I will get a mechanic to replace it tomorrow. What if like Jay mentioned, some kinda system failure that exists anywhere draining out the battery continously? How can I trace it? There are simply too many electrical parts in the cars. Will replacing the battery helps?

Check and make sure the alternator is working. Some alternators don't start working properly until they hit a certain rpm. If the remote starter is working properly and wired correctly, it won't drain the battery, but there may be some kind of system failure putting a drain on the electrical system. Start the car, rev it up a little and let it run. Put a voltmeter on the battery across the terminals. If the alternator is working, it should read between 13 to 14 volts.

Pressing the remote starter is no different to turning a key. its just the newest gadget put on cars to make then exciting,

I suspect John Paul is a Auto mechanic, he wouldn't have done all that work , but he would have charged for it.

Starting the car every week and not driving it has drained the battery, as long as you charge it up and don't leave the battery drained, chances are it will be OK. But running the car in idle with out driving it, just to charge the battery would not be doing it any favours either, If you can drive it, Your car will benefit from the movement of the oil around the engine and your tyres will not be standing in one place.

Alternatively you could buy a battery charger and put it on charge every now and again perhaps just before you want to use it.

Apart from draining the battery, starting the engine for just a few minutes is about the worst thing you can do to a car. If you don't get the engine and exhaust hot enough to burn off the condensation and acids you get a s a byproduct you'll rot everything out in no time.

this...hmmmm.... its just that your car is low on battery since its used and all that... my moms car had the same problem its just that the battery is low. (not because of the remote starter) its low probley because the previous owner left the doors open for hours and the light was on for hours and the battery drained like crazy but really just get a new battery and everything will just be fine after my mom got new batteries her car never needed a jump start again.

Have the charging system checked and new battery installed. Key word here is "usedcar" OK two words. Low voltage will cause relay noises. You may of found the reason the other person sold the car? I just hope there was only one reason and not that block sealer keeping water out of the oil? Sorry always the pessimist I'm a automechanic.

charge the battery back up after checking it is capable of holding a charge and stop using the remote to keep starting it without running it for a couple of hours.

if the battery is not capable of holding a charge get a new one and follow the advice just given

IF JOHN PAUL IS A NISSAN MASTER MECHANIC I am going to be the next president of the USA the answer he gave bore no resembelance to the question

When you start it, you need to let it run long enough for the alternator/generator to recharge the battery. If an alternator this should be in appx 10-15 minutes. Longer for a generator.

Just starting it does not charge it. It must be driven or else the alternator does not have enough time to recharge what you have drained by staring it.
