Most women with duct ectasia or periductal
mastitis do not need any specific treatment,
but it is important to go back to your GP if
you have any new symptoms.
If you have a persistent discharge and/or there
is inflammation around the nipple you may
need to have an operation to remove the
major ducts behind the nipple. This is usually
an operation known as a Hadfield's operation.
You may be in hospital just for the day, or
overnight, and you will have a small wound
near the areola (darker area of skin around the
nipple) with a stitch or stitches in it. After this
operation your nipple may be less sensitive
than before. The operation should solve the
problem, but if it recurs more ducts may need
to be removed.

The Hadfield's Procedure is a radical subareolar duct excision, also knnown as a major or central mammary duct excision. It is performed for excessive nipple discharge, which often results in infection. Nipple discharge may or may not be a sign of cancer. The discharge is usually analized to determine if cancer cells are present.
