I would recommend HP and Toshiba, a friend has a HP and is very good, I have just purchased a Toshiba and is much more reliable than my old Packard Bell.
I would stay away from Dell's from personal experience, overpriced for what they are.

Go for a laptop with XP if possible, will run a lot smoother than Vista, wait till its been ironed out before upgrading.

The brand name is really not important. I would get a 250GB hard drive (that is huge ), an Intel Duel core (1.86GHz) processor, and 1024 MB of RAM.Like I said, the brand is not important,Dell,hp,Gateway (etc) are all about the same, but if I were to pick one,it would probably be Dell. You should focus on the Processor, hard drive, and Random Access Memory (RAM).I could talk all day on this subject, but these things are the basic things to concentrate on.Also,if you are into gaming, you should have Graphic card with it's own memory.Mine has 512 MB of Hipermemory.

HPs are fine. I don't look at the brand actually, I look for the specifications (memory, clock speed, front side bus [fsb], hard drive, 802.11 connection, processor and others) because there are some Laptops that performs more faster or the same as the branded ones but at bit more cheaper.

The HPs are good however if you have a prolem with it all of the help is abroad and so costs alot! I recently got a Acer laptop and that was really cheap, i would keep an eye out. A good place to check out laptop specifications is www.comet.co.uk or it may be comet.com

Yes the hps are just fine, if you get one with windows vista you should get one with 1gb of RAM or more otherwise the performance is very bad, Also dell has good laptops if you want to look there also.

Well .. since you need it for music and pics and documents .... then you can easily use a Mac ... it's more efficient, more secure, and since you don't want it for gaming ... it's suitable ... Macbook would be a good choice .. since It can run Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows .. here is a link for the laptop features ...http://www.apple.com/macbook/macbook.html .. and this link is for the prices .. http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=MacBook

I would highly recommend a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092 for a student.

I love IBM. It stays for a longer period of time as I experienced. You just have to add or upgrade your computer's (any brand) hard drive to bigger capacity to have a lot of disk space.
