John Barras was established in Gateshead by John Barras Snr, and his partner, William Johnston in 1770.

John Barras died
John Barras died in 1811, aged 66, leaving a fortune of more than £30,000. The brewery was left to John Barras Jr., who set about expanding the brewery.
1884
John Barras Jr. took over the Tyne Brewery
1890
Launch of the Newcastle Breweries
With its up-to-date brewing facilities at the Tyne Brewery, and expert staff, John Barras formed the backbone of Newcastle BreweriesThe new company was launched on 27 February 1890, at which time its interests included brewing, malting, wine and spirits and property.
