I was wondering on how HD engines compare with S&S engines. Nothing like a 127cu S&S but maybe around 98cu to 107cu S&S? I would like to own a HD, around 95-05 model, but have always heard of the HD leaky engine. Plus, in custom bike mags, I always normally see S&S engines, and TP engines, but not willing to pay that much for them. Do newer HD models leak still? Do S&S engines match up to HD trannys? Has anyone ever done this? If so, what was your experince? Please, no one liner answers so you can get kudo points. Are there better websites that I can go to for this info? I would perferably don't want to go to a basis website like HOG.com or something (not sure if thats an actually website, I'm sure it is though) or ask a HD dealer. Does anyone have a S&S engine, and how do you like it? This is without mods, just stock, since there are many options of can be done to higher the output. Thanks.

I'm currently running a S&S 107 ci engine, S&S shorty super "G" carb.
Runs GREAT, runs strong.
Yes, they match up to Harley trannies.
Harley's don't leak anymore, by the way.
In fact, Harley started copying some of the technology that S&S came up with, cylinder base gaskets being one of them.

When Harley came out with the Evolution motors in 85 they fixed the leak problems associated with Harley Davidson's.
The Harley motor is massed produced for their motorcycles.
The S&S motors are machined from billet and are much stronger and they have to be because of the cubic inches. The S&S is basically a copy of the Harley engine just made differently and are much more expensive. I do believe that HD trans will work on S&S and S&S has there own. They even came out with a 6 speed before HD did.
You see S&S engines in the custom mags on most the bikes because they are the most popular and have been around the longest I believe and are a status symbol.
Just buy a 95 to 05 Harley and enjoy it and learn it first hand and you'll be glad you did. After a while when you have even more money to spend and want to customize your HD by putting more cubic inches on your bike put an S&S motor in it. If you don't like the S&S motor selll it. If you DO like the S&S motor better than the HD you can sell the HD motor to help cut the cost of your S&S. It's a win win situation. GO man GO.

For a normal street ride, the new Harley is as good as you can get. If you want extra performance, there are a variarty of choices. S&S is OK, several others are as good, some maybe better. All expensive. Unless you have an excellent performance shop nearby, only buy an assembled engine, with warranty. Most problems I have seen on S&S engines have been from sloppy assembly (one in the shop now, bad DS main, guy left drive pulley nut loose, bearing pushed seal out.) Last one was due to an oil line collapse, starved engine of oil, due to improper routing of oil feed line. If a guy install a stock HD engine in the same manner, would have the same problems. So, that makes a stock HD hard to beat, and cheaper.

the newer HD's don't leak so much anymore. The S&S motors are better in my personal experience, but they too are pricey. Everything HD has will mount right up to the S&S parts. Also Ultima makes some good products. I am curently running a 96" Ultima and I love it. it pushes 110 HP and 105 FT LBS of torque. Gets me where I need to be with little effort. Ultima has some great complete bike kits at a real reasonable price too if you are intertested in a complete custom bike.

H-D makes a great engine. But S&S makes a fantastic engine. The reason why you see them in custom bike mags is because they are better built and have better customer service (smaller company). If you were buying a $40k bike you would want the best engine too. They are usually linked to a baker tranny too (bulletbroof). It's just a matter of what you can afford.

The 1200 Evo used in the Sportster is a fine engine. The TC motors are plagued with issues such as weak bearings, disintegrating cam shoe tensioners, weak crank pins and other issues. You could not give me a TC 103. I have no experience with S & S engines but I would definitely check them out (if you have the money for them) before making the mistake of relying on a TC 103. TC 103 is a disposable motor.

The cobra engine is a 32 valve DOHC, it's more complex, the lightning engine is a SOHC 16 valve. The Cobra block can handle upwards of 900 HP with mostly stock internals. The Lightning engine cannot support that much power.

In hear good things about S&S. Like the stuff above. I have no personal experience with them. The stock HD is a good motor. I don't know what the warranty was in '05, but in '06 it was 2 years and UNLIMITED miles. The time part can be changed by the extended warranty.

If you pick one up that has a little warranty left, it should still be eligible for the extended.
