I'm currently taking Yasmin as birth control. I've been using some form of oral contraceptive for about ten years. I suffer from migraines (about 15 per month). I have tried meds such as Topamax and other preventatives, however nothing helps. I take Imitrex and Furinol as needed but taking that many pills can't be healthy.

I am ready to stop taking Yasmin in hopes that my migraines will become less frequent or less intense. Has anyone ever stopped taking the pill and experienced worsened migraines because of it?? If so, how long does this last?? I am assuming that, after taking the pill for so long and then stopping, it will have some effect on your body. Any experience would be helpful!! Thanks.

I have a friend who when I first met her had been on the pill with no problems then when she switched medication methods altogether to treat a health problem we both share she then had to go off that medication. She had to go off because she had problems with being on that medication when it came to side effects and such. Well, she tried to go back on the pill including Yasmin and it's newer version Yaz and has since ended up with problems with migraines.

She has even recently tried birth control pills that are progesterone only and she's having some problems with that by causing other effects on her body. Not sure what her next step is now when she talks to her doctor again next time.

i was a yasmin user for 1 year and i didnt experience any side effects however, some people do experience side effects. right now, i switched to a less expensive brand of oral contraceptive and i dont have any side effects.
if you try to read the drug literature in the box of yasmin, there are precautions there that states you have to stop if you are experiencing signs and symptoms. one of it is migraine. estrogen and progesterone combined pills such as yasmin increase BP and may affect the arteries thats why its contraindicated by people who have high BP, who experience migraine and thrombophlebitis, among others. its really better for you to check up on you ob gyne if you need to switch to a different oral contraceptives... hope i did shed some light on your inquiry...

I have migraines, also, but not nearly as many as you. My Dr told me to take 3 packs of pills back-to-back so I only had one period every 3 packs. This didn't help my migraine. Now, he has taken me off the pill for 6 wks to see if it helps my migraines/high blood pressure. I am still having migraines, plus my period is screwed up (I'm bleeding alot heavier, having cramps, etc that I didn't have when I was on the pill). So, I don't think going off the pill will necessarily help your migraines.
